Local Economies

Sporting events bring in the largest amount of revenue open to the public. Majority of the revenue is predetermined and is "already spent" money. According to Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, every OKC game brings in $1.3 million directly into the local economy. Without these large amounts of money being poured into the economy, local businesses and stores would be forced to closed and the chains and corporations would take over, helping the national economy, but worsening the local economy of that town.

Lockout Salary Effects

NBA owners will lose $1 million on average for every game canceled because of the lockout, and players will lose an estimated $350 million a month. Bars, restaurants and hotels don't have the public appeal that the clubs do, people wont know the suffers of local places. Also, the workers who help make basketball a big event in 30 cities will wonder how long they can get by without it.

Charlotte

Hickory Tavern has made a reputation for being one of Charlotte's best known sports bars. "We are the home town bar," said Thom Perez. "As a matter of fact we were recently runner up in ESPN's best sports bar in North America competition." "They tip you good because they're here for four hours at a time, they're good. They bring in good business," said server Brandi Stegall, whose salary depends on fans' tips. People live their lives off of the spectators of the sports, for those people it is vital that the sports be in session.

College Events

All of the venues in which the pro teams play, are not soley for the NBA. The variety of events is limitless, but one of the more intriguing to the basketball fan, would be to go watch college basketball in that specific venue for a cheap price. Even though it seems the revenue would be miniscual, all of the money from tickets goes to the venue and that means profit. This is a good coping way to avoid the eceonmy and its harm.

Layoffs in the NBA

 The layoffs, which represent about 11% of the NBA office, won't be re-filled when the lockout ends. The league said it lost nearly $350 million in 2009-10 and nearly $300 million last season. The league also closed its Paris office, which opened in 1997 as the NBA's first European headquarters, and its Tokyo office. Those in Paris who were not laid off will work in the London office and those still with the NBA in Tokyo will work in the Hong Kong office.

Los Angeles

 With the Lakers losing in the earlier stages of the playoffs in 2011 it cost the Los Angeles economy $70 million. In the shadow of Staples Center, restaurants and bars are empty, taxis are idle, and parking attendants have little to do.  Overall, those effected in the L.A. economy will be the small business owners that rely on the big name brand and appeal of the Los Angeles Lakers to gain a wage and support itself. The Lakers provide for almost the entire Los Angeles economy, due to their appeal.

Crown Burgers

When the Utah Jazz play a home game, Mike Katsanevas, owner of Crown Burgers restaurant in Salt Lake City, knows it’s going to be a busy night. “From 5:00 p.m. to about 6:45, we get a major rush”, Katsanevas said, "we live for basketball season". The majority of the revenue that Crown Burgers brings in is related to the NBA and with a lockout the restaraunt would lose countless customers.

NBA Only Cities

Jobs were at stake in the NBA lockout, but in cities where the local NBA franchise is the only major professional sports team, the picture is potentially even more bleak. Of the 30 franchises in the NBA, seven play in NBA-only markets: Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, Portland, Sacramento, San Antonio, and Utah. All of which are economically supported by their respected NBA team. THe other 23 teams were froced to give up some revenue in order to keep the 7 franchises alive. THe only teams that year to see positive numbers were those seven, the 23 others lost $11 million.

Mark Cuban

The economic downturn has been tough on fans, but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban says that that those who show up are "louder and rowdier" than years before. "People are going to sporting events because it's the one place where it's O.K. to yell and scream as much as you want," he said. Cuban hasn't taken a hit to the bank like some have during the recesssion, but that doesn't mean he's not doing his part to help. He said he recently sold his foreign cars and replaced them with American models to help give back to the American Economy.

New Jersey

The New Jersey Nets were having a tough season in 2009. The Nets CEO Brett Yomark came up with an idea to fill the 19,900 seat Izod Center. For their next home game each season ticket holder was given two free tickets, and the price of a number of the upper and lower level seats were sold for $10 each. The outcome, 700 $10 seats purchased, and the lower bowl was nearly sold out. An estimated attendance of 13,000-15,000 was recorded.
